DM on older Windows Operating Systems
A customer asked me to fix up a laptop for his younger son.
He did not want the laptop to have internet access.
I found a laptop with a Millenium OS, which is just what the man seems to want.
He doesn't care if there are any games on this laptop but I tried DM out on it.
It works fine but won't save games.
Anything I can do, or does anyone know?
Thanks ahead of time, MW

Where did you install the game? Try installing it on "C:\DM".
Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
Are you sure it's not saving the games? It writes the file instantly without a confirmation in the PC version.
Also, are you running it inside a zip file? It won't write files in there, even if its actually playing the files from in there.

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
I have the entire DM set of files saved in a DM folder. I've been simply copying the whole thing to other computers, going to the start ICON (sword),
then making a shortcut to that exe file on the desktop.
As I said, the game seems to be working fine, other than the save-game feature.

Yes. The other option is 'hidden' if that helps.beowuuf wrote:Is the folder read only?

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
If the folder is set to read only it won't be able to create the save file. If you can change the permissions then it should work perfectly, I hope!

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
Just a quick note: old versions of Windows always show folders as read-only even when they are not, so that may not be the solution...

For future reference, the laptop is running Windows Millenium.beowuuf wrote:If the folder is set to read only it won't be able to create the save file. If you can change the permissions then it should work perfectly, I hope!
I had to go to the exe file and remove the 'read only' option. After that, the 'game save' feature worked fine.
Thanks. I hope the person who uses this laptop gets interested in the DM game on it.

"Windows ME" always looks like an an exasperated expletive to me. Glad you solved it!

First time I had anything to do with that OS. I must say it didn't look too bad.beowuuf wrote:"Windows ME" always looks like an an exasperated expletive to me. Glad you solved it!
Anyone remember Windows 3.1? Yipes! A young person would not believe that was really a Windows environment.

Haha, yeah, our first PC had Windows 3.11 - mind you, the comp we had immediately before that was the Atari, so we were already used to a desktop even if this new one wasn't bright green .

Or Amiga workbench in my case, with all the coloured icons - so exciting

Edit: Actually, less colourful than I remember. I htink I created custom icons where I painted them all in

Oh, wow, that's old!
Most of my memories of the Amiga involve the grey 2.0+ workbench.
That one at least allowed 8 color icons so you could make it (slightly) pretty.

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
To be fair I used 1.3, so maybe they were already a little better. Not sure!

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
My first Amiga experience was Workbench 1.2, which I believe had the same blue/orange/black icons. Great fun messing with the icon editor back in the day... that day being 25 years ago! Seems like yesterday
Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
My first Amiga was the CDTV, so just after Aminga 500 but before Aminga600 with workbench 2.0 (I think)

Almost as pretty as the Atari desktop:

But as far as Windows, I cannot remember what the first one was. Maybe 3.1. Although looking back, since Windows 95 the cosmetics have not changed that radically.

Don't forget the four black bombs of the atari when it crashed - those were stark and evil!

Re: DM on older Windows Operating Systems
Yeah, I remember the bombs! That's why we used to say it had "bombed" or "bombed out" when a prog crashed. Used that term for many years afterwards, but these days I just tend to use the term "crash". Wasn't always just four bombs, either - sometimes you got a whole line of them going across the screen.

Bombs, pah! What you want is a nice red Guru Meditation.
I think we may have gone a little off topic.

Ha, ha, ha. Yep, I think we have ventured far into the 'off topic' dungeons. I was already laughing when the 'bombs' of the Atari came up, just after thinking,Gambit37 wrote:Bombs, pah! What you want is a nice red Guru Meditation.

Atari...discover how far you can go.
Brought back some great memories.
P.S. Thanks again for the help with the DM gamesave difficulty on the ME operating system.
